Narrator: Listen to a conversation between a student and a building manager.

管理员：希望你不是又来提窗户的事儿吧。

Manager: I hope you're not here about your window again.

管理员：我还以为之前已经解决了呢。那窗户打不开，对吧？

Manager: I thought we fixed that. It wouldn't open, right?

学生：对。记得有一次一个施工队在我的房间里粉刷墙壁，结果把窗户给漆住了。后来消防检查员说，窗户打不开是违规的。

Student: Right. Remember there was a crew painting my room and they painted it shut and the fire inspector said that a window that doesn't open is a violation?

管理员：但是我昨天派了一名工作人员去查看了，他说他已经修好了。

Manager: But I had one of my staff take a look at it yesterday and he said he'd repaired it.

学生：是啊，你知道这栋宿舍楼供暖不均匀，而我的房间在建筑的朝阳面。

Student: Yeah, I mean, you know how this dormitory doesn't heat evenly, and I'm on the hot side of the building.

白天的时候，房间里会变得特别热。很多人为了平衡室温都会打开窗户让外面的凉气进来。

During the day, it can get really warm. A lot of people open their windows to let cold air in and balance it out.

学生：不管怎样，我只是把窗户打开了一条小缝，但现在它完全卡住了，根本关不上。

Student: Anyway, I opened it just a crack, but now it's completely stuck, and I can't get it closed at all.

就连我的朋友鲍勃也试过帮忙关上窗户，他可是摔跤队的队员，连他都没办法。

Even had my friend Bob tried to close it, and he's on the wrestling team. Even he couldn't get it closed.

管理员：你是说你整晚都开着窗户睡觉？为什么没有打电话给保安人员？

Manager: You mean you slept with an open window all night? Why didn't you call the security staff?

学生：因为我回来得比较晚，实际上已经是深夜了。

Student: Well, I came home kind of late, and frankly, it was like way after hours.

我考虑过打电话给保安，但最后还是算了。不过一晚上这样的寒冷就已经够呛了。

I thought about calling security, then I just let it go. But one night of that cold is enough.

管理员：无论如何，你应该随时联系保安。即使他们自己无法解决问题，也会确保问题得到解决。

Manager: Well, you should always call security. Even if they can't fix the problem themselves, they'll make sure the problem gets solved.

学生：好的，我会记住的。但实际上不只是窗户的问题，我还觉得房间里的暖气设备好像也有问题。

Student: OK, I'll remember that. But actually it's not just the window. I think there's something wrong with the heating thing in my room, the radiator?

It must have cracked or something, because I just noticed a puddle of water in my room. And the heat barely seems to be working now.

管理员：所以你现在告诉我，你的房间里没暖气，窗户也关不上？

Manager: So you're telling me you have no heat and a window that doesn't close?

Manager: Well, this won't be a quick fix, I'm afraid.

那些暖气片都很旧了，修起来不容易，就算我们今天能修好窗户，你也无法住在一间没有暖气的房间里。

Those radiators, they're old and they're not easy to fix, and even if we repair the window today, you can't live in a room without any heat.

学生：你的意思是我要搬出去住？

Student: You mean I'm gonna have to move?

管理员：至少暂时要搬到别处住，直到我们能把暖气片修好或换掉。而这并不是一天两天就能完成的工作。

Manager: At least temporarily, until we can get that radiator fixed or replaced. And that's not a one-day job.

学生：我不这么认为。你能看到水是从哪里渗出来的，而且水看起来有点锈色。

Student: I don't think so. You can kind of see where it's seeping out. And the water looks sort of rusty.

管理员：锈色？嗯，出现锈色可不是好事。这样吧，我现在就去看看

Manager: Rusty? Yeah, rusty isn't good. Tell you what, I'll go look at it right away.

管理员：不如你吃过午饭后再回来？那时我应该就知道修理需要多长时间了。

Manager: Why don't you come back after lunch? By then I should know how long the repairs will take.

学生：你现在能不能给我个大概的时间？我想给一个朋友打电话。她在校外有套公寓。

Student: Can you give me some idea now? I'm gonna call a friend. She's got an apartment off campus.

她让我过去住，但是……我想她想知道大概要忍受我多久。

She'll let me stay there but...I'm sure she'd like some idea of how long she'll have to put up with me.

管理员：明天是周五，如果需要更换暖气片的话——很可能需要——那么零件最早也要到周一才能到货。

Manager: Well, tomorrow's Friday, and if the radiator needs to be replaced, which it probably does, we won't have parts before Monday.
