Dr. DiazNext week we'll begin chapter 5, which deals with the ethical treatment of animals. Please start thinking about that now by considering the role of zoos. Some animal welfare activists have asked for all zoos to be banned, claiming they are cruel to animals. However, many animal conservationists disagree with that idea. For today's discussion board, please explain your opinion about this topic. Should zoos be banned? Why or why not?
AndrewYes, I think they should be banned. Keeping animals in small, enclosed spaces is cruel. It goes completely against their nature. Some animals have huge natural territories, hundreds of square kilometers, but in a zoo they're kept in enclosures of maybe a few hundred square meters. I think this speaks for itself.
ClaireNo, l think zoos are generally helpful to animals. The animals in my hometown zoo look content and well cared for, and the zoo breeds some endangered animals so that their populations can be restored in their natural habitats. For example, the zoo scientists bred a near-extinct bird species and released the birds back into the wild, so the zoo helped save them.
