Pay Theater Assistants

Currently, the assistants who help with the production of plays on campus are student volunteers who are not paid or fully trained. I suggest that the theater department pay the assistants who help out with plays and also give them special training. As someone who has been in campus productions, I know that using volunteers doesn’t work because they often arrive late for rehearsals, or not at all, and they don't know a lot about operating stage equipment. However paid assistants would be more motivated to provide reliable help. They would also be able to operate stage equipment more effectively because they would have better training.

Sincerely,

Sally Smith

Narrator: Now listen to two students discussing the letter.
Student1: Hey Dan, what about this letter? You think it would
Student2: Help? Oh, definitely. The problem is student assistants have to work at other jobs to make money. So their real jobs always come first.
Student1: What do you mean?
Student2: I mean, like one of my friends was working for a show last year as a production assistant and he didn't show up for play rehearsal one night because his boss for his other job, his real job told him he had to stay late at work. He had no choice.
Student1: Hmm. So if he'd been paid to do the show.
Student2:Then he wouldn't have needed the other job. It wouldn't have gotten in the way. Cuz helping out with the play would've been his main job.
Student1:I guess. That's true. But what about the training thing? Is that necessary?
Student2: Oh, absolutely. You know, the equipment that assistants have to operate now is a lot more complicated than it used to be. You really need to know what you're doing so you don't mess up.
Student1: Yeah, especially on the night of the performance,
Student2: But having someone professional show them what to do. You know, someone who knows all about the latest equipment, show them step by step how to work it.
Student1: I see what you mean.
Student2: Not only would their skills improve, but the plays would be better too.
