Dr. AchebeWe have been talking about celebrities such as athletes and actors who share their views on important issues -for example, they weigh in on political issues and give their support to a particular candidate running for public office. In this discussion post, I would like you to discuss your opinion about celebrities making their views on social or political issues widely known. Should this be encouraged or discouraged? Why do you think so?
AndrewI agree that misinformation should be avoided; nonetheless, celebrities are also citizens and have the right, maybe even an obligation, to speak their minds on issues they feel strongly about. Celebrities may have thousands of followers on social media, some of whom may be inspired to do some good in society after hearing a celebrity's opinion.
Claire This should be discouraged. Many athletes and actors often seem out of touch with ordinary people; they are not well-informed and don't seem to have researched the issues they talk or write about. In some cases, they have had a negative effect on society when they spread misinformation and their fans mindlessly follow what they say.
