Dr. AchebeThis week we covered different schooling models. In most school systems, students have a summer vacation that is usually two or three months long. However, some people suggested that schooling should be year-round; that is, instead of having a lengthy summer vacation, students would have many short breaks throughout the year. Now, I would like you to discuss whether you agree that year-round schooling is a good idea and why you think so.
AndrewI totally support the idea of having many short breaks rather than one long summer vacation. One advantage of such a system is that it would help students hone their social and emotional skills. What better way to improve one's skills than by interacting and collaborating with classmates for longer periods of time?
ClaireWhile I agree with Andrew that developing one's social and emotional skills is important now more than ever, I am against year-round schools. I think a long stretch of vacation time is necessary as it provides more opportunities for students to interact with people outside their school- their family and friends -and not just their classmates.
